Bariatric Surgery for Morbid Obesity

Obesity is one of the most common medical conditions in which excess fat is accumulated in the body, which may have an advanced effect on the health leading to many health problems. This has negative predisposes and implications to the diabetes, heart problem, breathing difficulty and high BP. Obese people are obviously have the disfigurement to manage with as well. Excess weight and associated co-morbidities will cause an essential burden on health care costs which may cripple entire world economics.

Morbid Obesity: This is defined as the body mass index of more than 35. This is a status of disease that could be separated from the simple over weight, in the angle that weight loss is hardly successful with the non-surgical treatments and so many patients could have serious diseases associated with that.

Treatment for obesity involves alteration in the diet control and lifestyle along with regular workouts. Additionally Obesity surgery or bariatric surgery will result in the significant weight loss in a short period of time. This treatment also has side effects like hormonal imbalances, medical problems in particular.

Surgical treatment would be recommended when the person has the motivation to abide for a difficult method and after the surgery, and the BMI is above 40 or 35 with more than two co-morbidities.

Because many of the patients fail to loss their body weight with the medical surgeries, and if ever, finally return to previous condition, a consensus was made that bariatric surgery is one of the most effective method to treat the morbid obesity by the National Health Institute (NIH) in 1992.

The basic principle of this surgery is bypassing the upper gastrointestinal tract or reducing the volume of the stomach or the combination of these two methods.

Most frequently used surgical procedures are gastric sleeve resection, laparoscopic gastric banding, and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

The results of the bariatric surgery are very effective in the process of weight loss and also in treating the metabolic diseases of co-morbid. Many researches proven that various kinds of obesity related diseases like hypertension, diabetes, fatty liver, sleep apnea, hyperlipidemia, knee pain, and gout were dramatically developed or even totally cured in most of the patients after having the bariatric surgery.

Even the cardiovascular disease mortality rate can be reduced with this surgery, which means that Bariatric surgery is not only anesthetic surgery but also the life saving treatment.

Based on these results for the morbid obesity, the recommendation of the surgery is now being increased to the patients who are less obese with metabolic diseases, too.

It must be established that the bariatric surgery is not an easy method, but just the biggest help in the long time suffering process of the patient’s individual struggles.
